Free seminars - What does the WEEE directive mean for Local Authorities?
Thanks to the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive, Local Authorities (LAs) will:
- No longer have to pay for treating the hazardous electrical equipment they collect at Civic Amenity (CA) sites (or equivalent sites
such as waste recycling centres) and through bulky waste collections
- See a reduction in landfill costs
- See an increase in their recycling rate at no extra cost, and
- Look forward to receiving additional funding from retailers.
Unless LAs participate in this system, they will be responsible for meeting the cost of treating all hazardous WEEE that they collect.
In addition, new burdens funding will cease once the directive is implemented.
Valpak has now been provisionally appointed as the operator of the Distributor Take Back Scheme, which means that we will be responsible
for compiling the register of LA CA sites and equivalent which collect WEEE (these sites will be known as Designated Collection Facilities). Unfortunately we are not in a position to register
any sites as DCFs yet, however we are planning to offer a number of seminars throughout the UK where you can learn more about what the
WEEE directive means for Local Authorities.
All LAs that register to attend seminars will be added to our database of contacts which we will use to update you all on developments
going forward. Alternatively, if you do not wish to attend any of these seminars, you can still be added to the database by
registering here.
