Valpak to offer choice for Local Authorities in face of today's WEEE deadline

30 April 2008

Valpak, the UK's largest producer compliance scheme has issued a "life line" offer today to Local Authorities and AATFs who find themselves without a home for their 2007 evidence of WEEE collections or who find themselves coming late to the rules of the new system under the UK WEEE regulations.

The deadline for Local Authorities to submit their evidence of collection of WEEE for the first compliance period, 1 July 2007 until 3 December 2007, is today (30 April 2008) at 5pm.

If the evidence is not posted onto the settlement centre by this date and time the costs of collecting WEEE for that period, incurred by the Local Authority will be lost and cannot be claimed back.

With this in mind Valpak has made an offer to accept the evidence, free of charge, on behalf of the Local Authorities / AATFs who may not yet have registered an account on the Settlement Centre and will seek to secure, as close to the market rate for the evidence, or swap the evidence, and as a result extend the ability to recoup their costs by another month.

"Local authorities and companies who registered as AATFs have shown a commitment to make these regulations work, "a spokesperson for Valpak said, "and as such we would like to provide a possible opportunity to extend the deadline for these organisations by getting them to commit evidence to our scheme and we will seek to trade this material or swap it with other schemes on their behalf. Without this route we feel Local Authorities and AATFs could miss the opportunity to sell their 2007 evidence and therefore will have no chance of regaining any of the funds they have paid out to collect WEEE in 2007."

If any authority or AATF would like to take up this offer they should contact Valpak on tel: 08450 682 572 and ask to speak to a contact in our procurement team or email Valpak on info@valpak.co.uk and mark in the subject line WEEE 2007 evidence.

The scheme added, "It is not guaranteed that we can offer the full refund for the evidence but at least the offer ensures that the evidence has an extended life and possibly some value after the BERR deadline. The 5pm deadline today is an absolute and any evidence submitted for the first compliance period after this time will have no value and will be lost. This offers at least a chance for their evidence to be included in the final round of scheme negotiations."
