distributor take back scheme

Distributors supplying new EEE have to ensure that WEEE from private households can be returned to them free of charge on a one for one basis. The WEEE returned should be of equivalent type to and should fulfil the same function as the new EEE purchased.

Distributors opting to offer free in store take back should consider the following:

  • take back must be for all types of EEE sold and must be available free of charge to customers

  • distributors will need to record the number of units, by category, that they receive through take back of WEEE

  • any WEEE returned to distributors need not have been purchased from the distributor to whom it is returned

  • WEEE returned need not be identical to new EEE purchased, but of an equivalent type and function

  • distance sellers unable to offer in-store take back must provide an alternative

  • WEEE taken back will require storage and transportation for treatment at the cost of the distributor

Distributors with WEEE taken back, either in store or through other means, can return it into the system by contacting a producer compliance scheme and delivering it to them for treatment.

The alternative option to providing in store take back is to join the Distributor Take Back Scheme website (DTS)
