pre-treatment regulations
pre-treatment workshops for businesses

recycling for businesses - are you complying with legislation?

In October 2007 a new pre-treatment requirement was imposed under the landfill regulations. Business waste now has to be pre-treated to minimise the amount of materials sent to landfill sites. In addition, rises in Landfill Tax will dramatically increase waste costs over the next two years to £40 per tonne. It's good business sense to review traditional methods of waste disposal and adopt more efficient and environmentally-friendly practices. Doing so can save your business money.

Sauce Consultancy and Valpak Limited are running a series of workshops to inform businesses about the pre-treatment requirement. The morning events will include guidance and advice on the legislation from the Environment Agency and other industry bodies, as well as practical information on recycling and minimising waste.

the new requirement

Businesses now have to consider how they can manage their waste differently, and the three-point test below sets out what is meant by pre-treatment.

1 it must be a physical, thermal, chemical or biological process, which includes sorting
2 it must change the characteristics of the waste
3 it must do so in order to reduce its volume, reduce its hazardous nature, facilitate its handling; or enhance its recovery

Whilst it is the duty of the landfill operator to demonstrate pre-treatment, the process starts with the waste producer - your business. Baling and compaction do not meet the pre-treatment tests, but recycling does.

the events

The workshops will run between 8.00am and 12.30pm.
